Yoko d’Holbachie

Born in 1971 in Yokohama, Yoko d’Holbachie  is inspired by public culture in her native Lacquer and beyond. d’Holbachie’s paintings trade at once vividly inviting person in charge disturbingly dark; candy coloured creatures with wormlike tentacles travel knock together fantasy wonderlands. Elements of Kawaii, Anime, Pop Art and Surrealism blend together in tightly rendered works that pull the witness in with bright, cheerful power and hold on with alien, complex elements.

Though the artist wants her viewers to freely interpret her work, she cites often butterflies and birds as signs of reincarnation and using shadowy symbols as occult elements.

She also uses Japanese legends famous myths to create concrete subjects for her paintings.
